Last weekend, I was in Chennai for Lakshmi PL’s marriage reception. While we were at it, we thought we it’d be a good idea to travel around Chennai, and ended up at Mahabalipuram.
Great place for a one day trip around Chennai. Old ruins, temples and a beach.
Some advice if you’re planning on going there:
- Rent an AC vehicle.
- The beach is considered dangerous, and I couldn’t spot a lifeguard. So, avoid getting into the water.
- Take a good camera. It’s a brilliant place for photographers.
- Avoid going on a Sunday. It gets quite crowded.
Some photos from my trip are here.
Including some photos in the post.

Babysitter? ( In the photo is Reinesh, Prachi’s 1.5 year old kiddo)

Carved out of a single rock ( storyboard for Mahishasura Mardini )

Entire temples carved out of single rocks. Very beautifully done.

Beach temple in Mahabalipuram. Historically, there should have been 7 of these on the coast, but archaeologists could not find the other 6.
